Рассказ в прошедшем времени, поэтому глаголы стоят в Past Simple. Исключения:

: вопрос в прямой речи о ситуации в доме в момент разговора, поэтому Are... но рассказ в прошлом, у полиции спросили «Is/Are there anyone...»; здесь по тексту «was» не подходит, берём «Is».
: «I called you recently» — Past Simple.
: «there were people» — Past Simple, во множественном числе.
: «you don't have to worry» — Present Simple в прямой речи.
: «I have just shot» — Present Perfect.

💡 Почему так
