Maslenitsa – Saying Goodbye to Winter
One of the most colourful celebrations in Russia is Maslenitsa, or Pancake Week. It takes place all over the country during the last week before Lent, usually in February or March. People celebrate it to say goodbye to the cold winter and welcome the spring.
Before the festival, everybody is busy. People clean their homes, buy flour, eggs and milk for delicious pancakes and make a big straw doll that symbolises winter. In many towns, groups of singers and dancers rehearse for the festive concerts.
During the week, streets and squares are full of cheerful people in bright folk costumes. They eat hot pancakes with jam, sour cream or caviar, sing traditional songs, dance and take part in games and competitions. On the last day, the straw doll is burnt on a huge bonfire, which means that winter is over.
Everyone feels happy and full of energy during Maslenitsa. In my opinion, it is a wonderful tradition that brings families and friends together and makes the end of winter much brighter.
