- Last night — конкретное время в прошлом, значит Past Simple: She went to the gym last night.
- Они жили в Нью-Йорке до переезда — состояние в прошлом: They used to live in New York before moving to California. Можно также lived.
- Когда он был младше — прошлое состояние: He didn't use to like broccoli when he was younger. В отрицании после didn't used меняется на use.
Past Simple называет действие в прошлом, особенно с точным временем (last night). Used to описывает привычки и состояния, которых сейчас нет. В отрицании и вопросе: didn't use to.

Отрицание в Past Simple: did not (didn't) + глагол в начальной форме. С used to: didn't use to + глагол.
- I didn't watch that TV show last night.
- They didn't live in Italy when they were young.
- She didn't like ice cream as a child.
