Глагол главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени (said), поэтому время в придаточном сдвигается назад: Present Simple → Past Simple, Present Continuous → Past Continuous, Past Simple → Past Perfect, Present Perfect → Past Perfect, will/shall → would, can → could. Местоимения меняются по смыслу, this → that, today → that day, tonight → that night, last year → the year before (или the previous year), this morning → that morning.

В косвенной речи после глагола в прошедшем времени действует согласование времён: время сдвигается «назад», а указатели времени и места заменяются (today → that day, this → that).
