Setting. The story takes place in England in the
Plot. The novel is about the life of an orphan girl, Jane Eyre. She has a hard childhood, gets an education and becomes a governess. At Thornfield Hall she falls in love with her employer, Mr Rochester, and the story follows her struggle for independence and love.
Main characters. Jane Eyre, Mr Rochester, Bertha Mason, St John Rivers and Mrs Reed.
What they are like. Jane is honest, intelligent, strong-willed and proud. Mr Rochester is mysterious, passionate and unhappy. Mrs Reed is cruel and unfair to Jane. St John is cold and strict.
What happens. Jane grows up in her aunt's house, where she is unhappy. Then she is sent to Lowood School, where she studies and later teaches. She goes to Thornfield Hall as a governess and falls in love with Mr Rochester. On the wedding day Jane learns that he is already married: his mad wife Bertha is hidden in the house. Jane leaves Thornfield and nearly dies, but the Rivers family helps her. She gets an inheritance from her uncle.
Ending. Jane hears Rochester's voice calling her and returns to Thornfield. The house has burnt down, and Rochester is blind and has lost a hand. Jane marries him, and they are happy together.
Personal opinion. I enjoyed the book very much. It is a touching story about love, courage and self-respect. I would recommend it to those who like classic novels and stories about strong characters.
