Rewrite the sentences using used to. Use would where possible.
1 Marion had dark hair, but now she has blonde hair.
2 Simon didn't read comics when he was at school.
3 Edward's granddad walked for an hour to get to school when he was a child.
4 Claire trained every day when she was younger.
5 Ben worked in a shop, but now he works in a museum.
6 Diana lived in the countryside before she moved to the city.

Решение

Конструкция used to + инфинитив выражает прошлые привычки и состояния, которых больше нет. Would + инфинитив можно использовать только для повторявшихся действий (привычек), но не для состояний (have, live, be).
«had dark hair» — состояние: Marion used to have dark hair... (would нельзя).
Отрицание: didn't use to read (в отрицании используем didn't use to, без -d). Would в отрицании звучит неестественно.
Повторяющееся действие: used to walk или would walk — оба варианта.
Повторяющееся действие: used to train или would train.
«worked in a shop» — прежнее положение дел (работа): used to work; would не подходит, потому что это не регулярное действие, а период жизни.
«lived» — состояние: used to live (would нельзя).
