Past tenses. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct past tense. (Поставьте глаголы в скобках в правильное прошедшее время.)

2 By the time Jenny ... (get) to the theatre, the play ... (already/start).
3 Frank ... (drive) to work when, all of a sudden, a tree branch ... (come) crashing down on the road.
4 Before his accident, Peter ... (ski) for 5 years.
5 Yesterday, I ... (walk) home from work when it ... (start) to rain.
6 Ben ... (win) the race, so he felt thrilled.
7 Kyle ... (work) in that restaurant for six years before he ... (quit).
8 While I ... (prepare) dinner, the phone ... (ring).
- Вопрос о прошлом — Past Simple: were you; all day yesterday — длительное действие в прошлом → Past Continuous: was trying.
- By the time + Past Simple (got) показывает, что другое действие уже закончилось раньше → Past Perfect: had already started.
- Длительное фоновое действие → Past Continuous (was driving); короткое, внезапное событие → Past Simple (came).
- Before his accident, for
years — длительное действие до другого момента в прошлом → Past Perfect Continuous: had been skiing. - Фоновое действие → was walking; короткое событие, прервавшее его → started.
- Ben felt thrilled — следствие; завершённое действие → Past Simple: won (форма win — won).
- Работал шесть лет до того, как уволился: первое действие раньше второго → Past Perfect: had worked (или had been working); второе — Past Simple: quit.
- While I was preparing — действие в процессе (Past Continuous); короткое — the phone rang (Past Simple).
