Соединяем два предложения в одно союзом, не меняя смысла.
when «когда»: Sheila was ready to give up when a rescue team appeared on top of the cliff — «Шейла была готова сдаться, когда на вершине утёса появились спасатели».
but «но»: противопоставление — he did his best … but he just didn't have the strength.
while «в то время как»: два действия одновременно — Jack was trying to fix the radio while Linda was searching for food (оба в Past Continuous).
after «после того как»: They watched the horror film after the children had gone to bed — Past Perfect показывает, что дети легли раньше.
and: последовательные действия — He put on his coat and left (подлежащее общее, повторять he не нужно).
because «потому что»: объясняем причину — She took her umbrella because it was raining heavily.
