Решение
Past Simple (did, V) — законченное действие в прошлом, перечисление фактов. Past Continuous (was/were + V-ing) — действие, которое шло в определённый момент прошлого или было фоном для другого действия.
Did you see the lightning last night? — вопрос о факте (Past Simple, вспомогательный did). No, I was sleeping — в момент грозы я спал (процесс).
Why didn't you answer my text message? — Past Simple с отрицанием. I was taking a bath — в тот момент принимал ванну (процесс).
Where did you stay? — вопрос о факте. We rented a cottage — законченное действие.
Were you feeling down when I called yesterday? — состояние в момент звонка (Continuous). I was very tired — be в прошлом: was.
What was Jill saying when I walked in? — что она говорила в тот момент (процесс); walked in — короткое действие (Past Simple). She was talking about her mum — процесс.
What were you doing at lunchtime? — что делал в течение обеда (процесс). Why? Were you trying to call me? — «Ты пытался мне дозвониться?» (в это время; процесс).
