A Special School Day

Last Friday was a special day at Green Hill School. The pupils (1) ........ at school at 8 o'clock. They did not have their usual lessons. Решение

. Речь о прошлой пятнице (Last Friday), подлежащее pupils стоит во множественном числе, поэтому нужно прошедшее время were: The pupils were at school at o'clock.

. Рассказ идёт в прошедшем времени (Class A worked…), поэтому нужна форма got: each class got a different task.

. Дальше сказано «They liked working together», то есть ученики могли работать в группах. Подходит could: The pupils could work in groups.

. Подлежащее working together (герундий) считается единственным числом, а рассказ идёт в настоящем времени после «they saw that». Поэтому нужно makes: working together makes things easier.

💡 Почему так

Для вопросов – нужно прошедшее время, потому что в тексте рассказывается о прошлой пятнице. Герундий в роли подлежащего согласуется с глаголом в единственном числе (working … makes).
