The Amazing Platypus

The platypus is one of the most unusual animals in the world. It lives in eastern Australia and Tasmania. This animal has a duck-like bill, a beaver's tail, and otter's feet.

The platypus is a mammal, but it lays eggs. It does not give birth to live young. When Europeans first saw a platypus in the 18th century, they thought it was a fake animal. They believed someone sewed different animal parts together as a joke.

Platypuses are great swimmers. They spend most of their time in rivers and streams. They hunt for food underwater. They eat small creatures like shrimp and worms. Interestingly, platypuses do not have stomachs. Their food goes directly from the mouth to the intestines.

Another interesting fact is that male platypuses are venomous. They have sharp spurs on their back legs. These spurs can deliver a painful poison. This poison is not deadly to humans, but it causes strong pain for weeks.

Today, platypuses are in danger. They lose their homes because of pollution and climate change. People are working to protect these unique animals.
