Решение

Используем for, если указан период времени (three years, a long time, hours, several days, years, days, two weeks, five months). Используем since, если указан момент начала (then, that day, last evening, this morning, his escape).

💡 Почему так

For + период времени (сколько длится действие): for three years. Since + момент начала действия (с какого времени): since last evening. Оба слова употребляются с Present Perfect.
