Решение
Конструкция used to + глагол в начальной форме означает привычное действие или состояние в прошлом, которого сейчас уже нет. В реплике Профессора находим: "But, they used to live thousands of years ago."
Других примеров с used to в видимой части текста нет. Для сравнения, примеры Past Simple: "Saknussemm was here!", "We found it!"
💡 Почему так
Used to + infinitive говорит о том, что в прошлом что-то происходило регулярно или было верно, а теперь это не так. Перевод: «раньше жили».
