Cheating or improving? AI and English essays
Arthur Davidson, 45 - teacher: The danger for students of English in using chatbots for their work is that you need a very high level of understanding of English to know if the answer is useful or not. If you write an essay question into ChatGPT for example, the answer may ______ (1) good from a grammatical point of view and it may even seem like a plausible answer. However, when a teacher reads it, they will see that it doesn't actually ______ (2) sense. English teachers usually get to know quite quickly how good their students are at communicating, so it's very easy to see when they use grammar structures or vocabulary that they would not expect you to know. With that said, we always ______ (3) students to look at model answers to learn about the organisation, answering all points of the questions and tone. This last point is often forgotten by students who are used to hearing slang used around them and don't always ______ (4) that it's not appropriate to use in an essay.
Miguel Martinez - 23 - student: I know a few other students that have used ChatGPT or are planning on doing it because they think it will help them ______ (5) good marks in their exams. I've always been uncomfortable with this idea. I would ______ (6) to get a bad mark, but for the work to be all my own than a good mark because I got help. If you fake having an understanding of something that you don't really have, all you are doing is cheating yourself. For example, if you ______ (7) that you understand some instructions in a job when you don't, people will find out quickly and not only will you look stupid, people will ______ (8) that you are a liar.
