Past Continuous строится was/were + глагол с -ing: was talking и was cleaning обозначают одновременные процессы (a); was staying — процесс в определённый момент прошлого (b); was walking — длительное действие, прерванное падением ребёнка (c). Past Perfect строится had + третья форма: had just caught, had lost — действие произошло раньше другого прошедшего события (d). Past Simple — вторая форма глагола: saw, pulled; они называют последовательные действия (e). Past Perfect Continuous — had been + глагол с -ing: had been staying подчёркивает процесс до другого момента прошлого (f). У was staying также есть значение фонового действия, прерванного he found.
