Read the table. Which modals express: • positive certainty? • negative certainty? • possibility? • criticism? • negative obligation?
A She may/might/could have done it. (It’s possible that she did it.)
B She can’t have done it. (It isn’t possible that she did it.)
C She must have done it. (I’m certain that she did it.)
D You should/ought to have revised more. (It was wrong not to revise.)
E You needn’t have waited for me. (It wasn’t ..... necessary.)
В таблице речь о выводах и оценке уже прошедшего действия. После модального глагола стоит have + третья форма глагола. Must have done выражает уверенность, что действие произошло; can’t have done — уверенность, что оно не произошло. May/might/could have done оставляет возможность. Should/ought to have done критикует невыполненное действие. Needn’t have done означает, что действие выполнено напрасно, поскольку необходимости не было. В скобках E вставляем really: «это в действительности было не нужно».
Positive certainty — must have done (C). Negative certainty — can’t have done (B). Possibility — may/might/could have done (A). Criticism — should/ought to have done (D). Negative obligation — needn’t have done (E). E: It wasn’t really necessary.
