Static/Moving features
a Read the theory box.
We can use prepositional phrases such as all around, to the left/right of, at the top/bottom of, as far as the eye can see etc to describe static features and verbs such as flow, run, stretch, wind, curve, rise to describe features suggesting movement. This makes our description more vivid.
b Read the extract and find the words/phrases used to describe moving features and those used to describe static features.
My grandma's house is situated at the end of a narrow road which climbs gently upwards. A trickling stream runs along the bottom of the garden. Beyond the house, green and yellow fields stretch for mile after mile. To the left there lies a dense wood with a footpath running through it, leading to the nearby little village.
c Think of your house. Use prepositional phrases to talk about its location.
a) Рамка: статичные (неподвижные) объекты описываем предложными сочетаниями (all around — «вокруг», to the left/right of — «слева/справа от», at the top/bottom of — «наверху/внизу», as far as the eye can see — «насколько хватает глаз»); объекты, «создающие впечатление движения» (река, дорога), — глаголами flow (течь), run (бежать), stretch (тянуться), wind (виться), curve (изгибаться), rise (подниматься).
b) В отрывке ищем такие слова.
Движение (moving features, глаголы): climbs gently upwards — «плавно поднимается вверх» (дорога); runs along the bottom of the garden — «бежит вдоль нижней части сада» (ручей); stretch for mile after mile — «тянутся миля за милей» (поля); running through it — «проходящая сквозь» (тропинка); leading to the village — «ведущая к деревне».
Статика (static features, предложные сочетания): situated at the end of a narrow road — «расположен в конце узкой дороги»; along the bottom of the garden — «внизу сада»; beyond the house — «за домом»; to the left — «слева»; there lies a dense wood — «лежит густой лес»; the nearby little village — «ближайшая деревенька».
c) Образец: My house is situated at the end of a quiet street. Behind the house there is a small garden. To the right of it a path leads to the park. A river flows along the bottom of the hill, and the school is not far from the house, at the top of the street. — Мой дом стоит в конце тихой улицы. За домом небольшой сад. Справа от него тропинка ведёт в парк. Река течёт у подножия холма, а школа недалеко, наверху улицы.
b) Moving features: climbs gently upwards, runs along the bottom of the garden, stretch for mile after mile, running through it, leading to the village. Static features: situated at the end of a narrow road, beyond the house, to the left, at the bottom of the garden, there lies a dense wood.
c) My house is situated at the end of a quiet street. Behind the house there is a small garden. To the right of it a path leads to the park.
