Unreal past
Study the examples. Then put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense.
Present: • If I were you, I'd leave now. • I wish she would come earlier. • Suppose you won £10,000, what would you buy? • It's time we went. I'd rather you called her now.
Past: • If I had known, I would have attended the meeting. • If only he had been on time. • Suppose she had stayed longer, would you have told her? • I'd rather you hadn't lied to me.

3 If she ....... (tell) me she had an exam today, I wouldn't have made so much noise last night.
4 I'd rather you ....... (leave) me alone.

6 If you ....... (save), we would be able to afford to go on holiday.
7 I wish he ....... (get) a job instead of lying around the house all day.
8 I'd rather you ....... (not/copy) my homework and did it yourself.

Правило по таблице: после wish, if only, would rather (+ другое лицо), it's (high) time, suppose, if — глагол ставится в форму прошедшего времени. Past Simple — о настоящем/будущем, Past Perfect — о прошлом.
- would have done в главной части → Suppose + Past Perfect: hadn't passed («Предположим, ты не сдал экзамены»).
- If only I … last night — прошлое → Past Perfect: hadn't stayed up.
- wouldn't have made — тип
→ if-часть Past Perfect: had told. - I'd rather you … me alone — о настоящем → Past Simple: left.
- It's high time you … — Past Simple: started («давно пора начать»).
- we would be able — тип
→ Past Simple: saved. - I wish he … a job — желание про настоящее, раздражение: would get (wish + would — о том, что хотелось бы изменить в чьём-то поведении).
- I'd rather you … my homework and did it yourself — did (Past Simple) → параллельно: didn't copy.
- how would you have felt — тип
→ Suppose + Past Perfect: had got. - If only you … last night — прошлое → Past Perfect: hadn't borrowed.
