Forming compound adjectives
Compound adjectives are made up of two or more words and are usually written with hyphens between them. They are often formed like this:
1 adjective, noun, or numeral + noun + -ed (grey-haired, two-faced)
2 adjective or adverb + past participle (low-paid, well-behaved)
3 adjective, adverb or noun + present participle (good-looking, long-lasting)
1 far; 2 red; 3 record; 4 time; 5 self; 6 old
a consuming; b fashioned; c centred; d fetched; e breaking; f blooded
b Use the adjectives in sentences.
▸ That story is too far-fetched to be true.
Соединяем слова из левого и правого столбцов через дефис, проверяя смысл по словарю.
- far + d fetched = far-fetched [ˌfɑː ˈfetʃt] — неправдоподобный, притянутый за уши.
- red + f blooded = red-blooded — энергичный, полный сил, «горячий» (красная кровь).
- record + e breaking = record-breaking — рекордный, побивающий рекорды (существительное + причастие I).
- time + a consuming = time-consuming — отнимающий много времени.
- self + c centred = self-centred — эгоцентричный.
- old + b fashioned = old-fashioned — старомодный.
b) Предложения с каждым прилагательным (компонент составного прилагательного не меняется):
