Passive Voice
Read the examples and complete the rules with: to be, past participle, person. Explain how the passive sentence is formed.
Active: Hollywood makes 2,000 films per year. (S = Hollywood, V = makes, O = 2,000 films)
Passive: 2,000 films are made by Hollywood per year. (S = 2,000 films, V = are made, A = by Hollywood)
S = SUBJECT, V = VERB, O = OBJECT, A = AGENT
We use the Passive when we are more interested in the action than the 1) ..... or thing who does it.
We form the Passive with the appropriate form of the verb 2) ..... and the 3) ..... of the main verb.
Сравниваем два предложения.
Active (действительный залог): Hollywood [S] makes [V]
Passive (страдательный залог):
Как образуется пассив: дополнение из активного предложения становится подлежащим, глагол ставится в форму to be (в нужном времени и числе: are) + причастие II (made), а подлежащее активного предложения становится агентом с by (или опускается).
Заполняем правила:
- We use the Passive when we are more interested in the action than the person or thing who does it — когда нас больше интересует действие, чем тот, кто его выполняет.
- We form the Passive with the appropriate form of the verb to be…
- …and the past participle of the main verb.
- person;
- to be;
- past participle.
Passive = to be (в нужной форме) + past participle: Hollywood makes films → Films are made by Hollywood.
